I was curious after my last blog about drawing manga or cartoons so i order a couple of books to see how difficult this is to do. Also to answer my own question "is it art". The first book I ordered is How To Draw Chibi. This book was very easy to follow with well written instructions as well as illustrations. I think this book is very good for beginners as well as young children who show an interest in drawing. The last time I remember drawing was probably in elementary school approximately 30 years ago, so my drawing are probably still at that level. Mind you, I don't have much imagination at my age, which is something most artist tend to hold on to. I definitely admire any type of artist who is capable of creating . Here is a few drawings I did. I should have taken more time but I just wanted to see if I could draw anything by using these books. I also learned they have starter manga drawing kits which include all the tools I didn't have. I used an old drawing pad one of my kids had from school and a permanent marker to do my outline. I did however find that in adobe 3.0 there is a tool to fill in the color. I'll also include links for where i bought the books as well as the other drawing tools. I'd love to see your work as well.

Anime: Art or Cartoon
Anime refers to Japanimation. This term is rarely used today. In the U.S. we generally categorize anime as animation from Japan which replaced the term Japanimation.
Traditional animation consist of hand drawn pictures which are copied or traced on a transparent acetate sheets. These are known as cels and can be purchased from your favorite animation such as Walt Disney movies. They are then placed over a painted background and photographed one by one with a roslum camera. Each drawing is slightly different, which helps create the illusion of the characters moving. The concept is the same as flip books. With today's technology they can simply scan each drawing into the computer and digitally transfer it to 35mm film.
These drawings are created by cartoonists. I would call them artists due to the talent it takes to create these animations. They sketch their drawings in pencil and later use black ink, brushes or metal pens to go over or outline them. Animation, anime, manga, and comic books all consist of each artists unique artwork.
To understand anime or manga, you really need to take a look at Japanese history and how it has influenced their artwork. Japanese art dates back before B.C. and has evolved along with Japan's history. This is centuries of artwork, style and techniques that has developed and been incorporated into the artists work. Anime and manga reflect these styles as well as the artists own style and talent.
I'd say anime is definitely art, not just a cartoon. What do you think? Here are some good deals and links I have found. Try them and let us know what you think. If you're already a fan talk to us.
